A visit to the oldest food market: the Marché des Enfants Rouges

A ten-minute walk from the Hotel Les Tournelles, you can discover one of the key places in the district: the Marché des Enfants Rouges. The market’s three discreet entrances and its very curious name add to the somewhat mysterious aura of the place, an aura much loved by the inhabitants of the Marais and visitors alike. Come with us to discover this unique and deliciously tempting place…

Four centuries of history

The old ‘petit marché du Marais’ opened in 1615, just a few steps from the Hospice des Enfants-Rouges. Created by Marguerite de Navarre at the very end of the 16th century, the Hospice was a charitable establishment that welcomed children, often orphans, from around Paris. Each child wore a red cloak, a symbol of Christian charity, which gave the place its name: Les Enfants Rouges (the Red Children). The nearby market has remained active since 1615. It was listed as a historical monument in 1982 and its in-depth renovation and preservation in the 1990s allowed its architectural details to be highlighted, including a beautiful glass roof and an ornate portal at the entrance on the Rue de Bretagne.

A gourmet stroll through the Marché des Enfants Rouges

The Marché des Enfants Rouges is undeniably popular, but this popularity is not only due to its fascinating history and architectural heritage! Above all, it owes its success to the quality and freshness of the produce offered. The stalls piled high with fruits and vegetables, and those of caterers and food artisans, delight the eyes as well as the taste buds. Gastronomy is also given pride of place, with stands dedicated to Italian, Greek and Lebanese specialities. Every day, except Monday, you will find fresh produce, sometimes local and often organic, as well as delicacies to taste on the spot or to take away for an impromptu picnic in a Parisian park such as the Square du Temple Elie-Wiesel, a few steps away.

Treat yourself to the Marché des Enfants Rouges

The market is open continuously from 08:30 to 20:30, so there’s plenty of opportunity to stock up there for the day, stroll around to soak up the scents and colours, or stop off for a meal. In addition to the catering stalls where you can taste specialties on the go, there is the option of sitting at the tables of the Estaminet or the Petite Fabrique for a relaxed and leisurely meal. These restaurants, located within the market, offer menus made up of ingredients sourced from the stalls and so they change every day. And if you visit the market on a Sunday morning, take the opportunity to settle down to a hearty and delicious brunch!

The Marché des Enfants Rouges is a beloved institution for the inhabitants of the Marais. Take some time out to visit this delightful place during your stay at the Hotel Les Tournelles.
