Ancient Egypt Takes Center Stage at the Atelier des Lumières

Harnessing digital technologies for art and emotion, the Atelier des Lumières presents a breathtaking new exhibition every year. After enchanting us with Van Gogh, Cézanne, Klein, Klimt, and Chagall, this unique venue takes us on a journey to Egypt this year with two consecutive exhibits: "The Egypt of the Pharaohs from Khufu to Akhenaten" and "The Orientalists." You can easily explore them during your stay at Hotel Les Tournelles.

The Magic of the Atelier des Lumières

Inspired by the concept pioneered in the quarries of Les Baux de Provence in the Alpilles, the Atelier des Lumières was established in Paris in 2019. The former disused foundry was repurposed, utilizing its vast spaces to project images and videos, giving it new life and preserving a part of Parisian industrial heritage. The idea is to immerse visitors in works of art, enhanced by light, movement, and music. From brushstroke details to material effects, perspectives to the play of light and shadow, each element of the artwork is highlighted by projections on large surfaces—floors, walls, and ceilings. This approach establishes a direct connection with the artwork, free from museum mediation. Emotions thus arise uniquely for each visitor, regardless of age or art expertise. You can move at your own pace through the exhibition, advance or linger, and personally engage with the emotions evoked without the need for a guide. The Atelier des Lumières invites you to a unique encounter with art.

The New Program

Starting from February 9, the new main exhibition will be dedicated to ancient Egypt. Delicate papyri, monumental sculptures, meticulous frescoes, and enchanting paintings will showcase the characteristic elements of the art and culture of ancient Egypt in a captivating display of shapes and colors. Famous pieces like the bust of Nefertiti or the funerary mask of Tutankhamun will be presented alongside lesser-known but equally iconic elements, such as frescoes from the Temple of Luxor. Take the time to explore the second exhibition, dedicated to the Orientalists. These French painters, who accompanied Napoleon in his Egyptian campaign, brought back a unique experience of light and forms that significantly influenced not only their own work but also the major artistic movements of the time—a beautiful connection between ancient Egypt and our era.

Just a twenty-minute walk or a short public transport ride from Hotel Les Tournelles, the Atelier des Lumières is a unique and fascinating place. From February 9, 2024, it offers two new exhibits, each in its own way, dedicated to Egypt. It would be a shame not to experience it, especially since the opening hours are extensive, with late-night openings until 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Remember to book online to save time!
